This data was derived from zone substation information provided under Rule 5.13A of the National Electricity Rules. The zone substation information was raw data. The Distribution Network Service Provider has not analysed, assessed or validated the quality or accuracy of that data. The Distribution Network Service Provider makes no warranty or guarantee as to the quality, accuracy or suitability for any particular purpose of the zone substation information.
Full description

The dataset presents estimates of thermostatically controlled load (TCL) for 351 zone substations in the Essential Energy supply area. Estimates reflect, for each substation, the half-hourly aggregate TCL demand for 2013, drawn from a mathematical model developed by the EUDM team. The approach uses cold, mild and hot days to identify typical heating and cooling trends for each zone substation, and then estimates the distribution of TCL model parameters such as air-conditioner set-points and power. The resultant TCL model is then used to provide half-hourly estimates of TCL demand for a full year, based on local weather data. See Related Resources for further methodological detail and for the total load for substations in the Essential Energy supply region.

Note that thermostatically controlled load is dominated by air-conditioning and the dataset therefore rests as a suitable proxy for air-conditioning. The estimates provided will include refrigeration and other thermostatically governed loads.

Note that results include approximate quality estimates to guide use of the dataset. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values provided indicate the relative accuracy of the AC estimates. As ground-truth aggregate air-conditioner load data is unavailable for substations, accuracy reflects how close, for each substation, the sum of the estimated air-conditioner load and an estimate of baseline load is to the measured total substation load. High MAPE values indicate that the AC estimates (when summed with the baseline load) are meaningfully different from the measured load and should be treated with caution.

Note that zone substations that had more than 40% of load data missing for 2013 have been excluded in this set.

Note that the data has been formatted to adhere to the consistent EUDM-WESCML data format. The standard provides a consistent view across distribution businesses.

Column descriptions
Column labelDescription
StartDeliveryTimeThe starting timestamp of the zone substation recording interval. The timestamp is represented in ISO 8601 format.
EndDeliveryTimeThe ending timestamp of the zone substation recording interval. The timestamp is represented in ISO 8601 format.
UtilityNameThe distribution network business responsible for the zone substations listed.
ZoneID|ZoneName|EndUseSpecifies the modelled end use (such as Air conditioning). The column header describes the identifier of the zone substation, the common name of the zone substation and the end use. Pipes separate each of these components. If identifiers or names are unknown, a dash (-) symbol is used.
ZoneID|ZoneName|MedianSupplyEstimateSpecifies the estimated median of the 95% confidence bound for the AC usage generated from the model. The column header describes the identifier of the zone substation, the common name of the zone substation and median supply estimate. Pipes separate each of these components. If identifiers or names are unknown, a dash (-) symbol is used.
ZoneID|ZoneName|MedianSupplyEstimateUnitsSpecifies the unit of active power measurement for the zone substation (such as MW). The column header describes the identifier of the zone substation, the common name of the zone substation and the median supply estimate units. Pipes separate each of these components. If identifiers or names are unknown, a dash (-) symbol is used.
ZoneID|ZoneName|UncertaintyBoundLowerSpecifies the estimated median minus the estimated lower bound of the 95% confidence bound for the AC usage generated from the model. The column header describes the identifier of the zone substation, the common name of the zone substation and the uncertainty bound lower. Pipes separate each of these components. If identifiers or names are unknown, a dash (-) symbol is used.
ZoneID|ZoneName|UncertaintyBoundUpperSpecifies the estimated upper bound minus the estimated median of the 95% confidence bound for the AC usage generated from the model. The column header describes the identifier of the zone substation, the common name of the zone substation and the uncertainty bound upper. Pipes separate each of these components. If identifiers or names are unknown, a dash (-) symbol is used.
Assumptions
  • Zone substations included in the dataset represent a subset only of all zone substations in the Essential Energy supply region.
  • Timestamps in the datasets reflect local time for New South Wales.
  • The first timestamp of the data is associated to StartDeliveryTime.
