Full description

The data reflects outputs from CSIRO’s modelling of the transport sector. CSIRO’s transport modelling provides projections of least cost transport sector outcomes for given scenarios. In this case, the projections are for the uptake, energy consumption and emissions impact of electric vehicles out to 2050, examined under scenarios provided in the Low Emissions Technology Roadmap (LETR) and the Electricity Network Transformation Roadmap (ENTR).

The Low Emissions Technology Roadmap provides four scenarios. Each scenario was designed to explore how the transport sector could assist the whole of the energy sector in meeting Australia’s Paris greenhouse gas emission commitment of 26% to 28% below 2005 levels. Each scenario (Pathway) assumes a share of electric and fuel cell vehicles in the sale of new vehicles over time. This assumption is included in the data. The only other significant differences in assumptions across scenarios is that Pathway 1 and Pathway 4 assume lower road transport demand growth and faster improvement in internal combustion engine efficiency than Pathway 2 and Pathway 3. Note that Pathway 3 and 4 include projections for fuel cell vehicles.

The Electricity Network Transformation Roadmap provides an additional scenario. The Roadmap was a collaboration between CSIRO and Energy Networks Australia, drawing on a series of workshops and input from a diverse set of electricity sector stakeholders to design a pathway forward for Australia's electricity system.

Further information on both the LETR and ENTR reports is available in the Related Resources listing on this page.

Note that the data reflects projections made in 2016 and therefore will not include any unexpected changes in the transport sector since that time.
