Analysis of the impact of energy costs on industrial competitiveness in Australia, using national energy cost data from 2002-3 to 2013-14.
This report provides a two-part analysis of the impact of energy costs on industrial competitiveness in Australia. The first part explores the impact of energy price changes on industrial energy efficiency, using Australian data from 2002-3 to 2013-14. The second part explores the impact of energy costs on export competitiveness. Findings refer to single-digit and two-digit coarse industrial classifications under the Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC),
A comparison of country energy costs is sourced from the World Input Output Database (WIOD) annual time-series dataset from 1995 to 2011. Australian industrial energy costs since 2011 are sourced from ABS estimates of Capital, Labour, Energy, Materials, and Services (KLEMS). In particular, ABS cat. no. 5260.0, Experimental Estimates of Industry Level KLEMS Multifactor Productivity, 2013–14 and ABS cat. no. 5209.0.55.001, Australian National Accounts: Input-Output Tables 2013–14, Table 2. The two main sources of energy use data are the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science ABS Energy Account, Australia (EAA) and the Australian Energy Statistics (AES).
